Exploring the gaming world with AT

Dom Parker profile

This season we’ve been exploring gaming and the AT that makes it accessible, as well as what it means to people in our community. To round it all off, we’re handing over the controller to an AT user with a unique perspective on gaming, both from a professional and personal point of view. We sent her a series of questions to answer, and this article features her responses.

Dom Parker (she/her), a multidisciplinary professional and accessibility advocate with expertise in video games, music, and inclusive design. Dom combines her technical audio skills, game design knowledge, and commitment to inclusion to help developers create games that are enjoyable and accessible for all players.

What games do you play?

I'm a huge fan of RPGs—they let me immerse myself in captivating storytelling, deep character development, and expansive worlds. I especially love ATLUS games, particularly the Persona series, which blends complex narratives with stylish design and engaging turn-based combat.

I'm also drawn to open-world exploration games like Skyrim, Dragon's Dogma, Dragon Age, Red Dead Redemption. There's something magical about getting lost in these vast, beautifully crafted worlds, each corner holding a new adventure. Admittedly, I’m always late to the party with new releases, but right now I'm working my way through Metaphor: Refantazio. I'm loving it so far (though the UI can be a bit overwhelming)!

What assistive technology (AT) do you use for gaming?

I primarily game on consoles and rely on accessibility features to enhance my experience. Subtitles are essential—not just for catching dialogue but also for picking up subtle narrative details. I also use stereo audio for immersive navigation through game environments.

Since I have severe glare sensitivity, I adjust contrast and brightness settings to reduce eye strain—dimmed contrast options are an absolute lifesaver. Occasionally, I use zoom functions to focus on small UI elements or critical details in gameplay, which is especially helpful for puzzles and exploration.

"Gaming is a deeply personal way to unwind, explore, and connect with unique worlds."

What opportunities does gaming provide that aren’t possible in other formats?

Gaming offers a level of interactivity and immersion that’s unmatched by other media. Unlike passive formats, gaming allows you to actively participate in the story, shape outcomes, and explore worlds at your own pace. It’s not just about escapism; it’s about experiencing consequences and making choices that matter.

Unlike re-reading a book, you can replay a game in entirely different ways, offering fresh perspectives and endless possibilities. Gaming is a deeply personal way to unwind, explore, and connect with unique worlds.

What does gaming mean to you?

Gaming has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. From spelling and maths games on my dad’s computer in the ’90s, to my first handheld console—a see-through Game Boy Colour with Pokémon Silver—to co-op sessions with my partner on the PlayStation 5, gaming has always been a source of joy and connection.

Let’s face it, the world can be a scary and uncertain place, but gaming offers a comforting escape. It’s a chance to explore new worlds, disconnect from stress, and find creativity and inspiration. At the same time, it’s a bridge to community—where you can bond with others over shared passions, make lifelong friends in Discord servers, and feel a sense of belonging. For me, gaming is joy, creativity, and connection all rolled into one.
