From croissants to crabs

During the hour long party, our community shared presentations about where they’d go if they had a time machine, how to rate the quality of almond croissants, a description of sensory processing and ‘glimmers,’ and more. As a result of sponsorship from DDWA, though a Department of Communities Grant, we were able to hire Auslan interpreters as well as a Captioner, to make the event as accessible as we could for our community. In part the online format was chosen so that community members who may not usually be able to attend events, whether due to being bed-bound, regionally based or in other ways excluded, would feel welcomed and included.

One of the attendees told us that,

‘Because I'm deafblind, I often miss a lot of what's happening when I go out. I learnt so much. I loved it! I would definitely come again.’

We hope to be able to run a similar event in the future, to bring our community together to share their special interests in an inclusive, accessible and welcoming environment.
